Final Project

The Vessel

Abstract: This project focuses on The Vessel, a structure found in lower Manhattan. This project showcases the beauty of the newly built structure through dynamic shots filled with color correction and usage of a DJI gimbal.

PRODUCTION LOG:

Pre-Production:
  • SEPTEMBER: I began my brainstorming process by deciding what type of video should I make and what to focus on. Initial I was thinking of making vlog style video and point on different features of New York City such as MET, Central Park, One World Trade Center, Vessel, etc. However, for the scope of the project, it would have been like a 10-minute video and with a video on just focusing on the places instead of commentary. So like the new focus was to make a short video that would highlight the aspect of the location I pick.
Production:
  • OCTOBER: Once I decided on focusing on The Vessel, I began to process a storyboard of what message I wanted to drive to this video. I decided to focus on my experience of the day is there. I wanted to show how I got there and what it felt like being at a very tall structure, however, not even as close as to the skyscrapers in the city. With this in mind, I pick a date to go out and begin my shooting process.
  • NOVEMBER: With the feedback from the footage from the first time I went to The Vessel, I've chosen to go a second time. This time I rented I DJI Ronin gimbal. This would allow me to create movement shots without having the camera move around so much. Being back at the structure can face some challenges, especially when using footage from older visits. October was much warmer than being there mid-November were it was much colder. Therefore, I ensure that my shots wouldn't make it that obvious.
  • DECEMBER: With some final adjustments to the video, and feedback from classmates I have created a project that focuses on The Vessel. I used footages from the different visits I was there and captured the experience as being at such a structure.
SELF-EVALUATION:
During the process of this project, I've learned many new skills and tips to ensure my shots from getting to a professional state. Feedback from my peers and professors helped me look at my project through different perspectives. I enjoyed how my project was presented and how it showcases the many skills I used throughout the creation of the project; shooting, stabilization, color correction, music choice, and editing. Creating this project has given me the experience to enhance many skills and learn from my peers. Moving forward, I would like to different this project another chance and reshoot more shots. I would like to have shot in multiple kinds of weather to get a different sense of the experience being there. Furthermore, I would want to make sure I record LOTS so that I can create multiple stories from one day in the city.

Project Review

Version 0.1

Raw footage with no transitions. This is just a mock up of the final version.

Version 0.2

This version I have included color correction and made some transitions to this.

Version 0.3

This version is just few corrections to the transitions.

These versions have been created through different feedback I have received based on stabilization, transitions, masking, and color correction.

Shot Analysis

This fade change was a test to enhance the visual storytelling aspect of my project. After the midterm, I wanted to incorporate more transformations and color correction to the video itself. For the final project itself, I hope to add more transition and finish the masking transition and make it much more smooth.

Updating on Project

This past weekend I have been able to reshoot in NYC and working in the process of going through all the footage. Below are two videos that stuck out to me. Going forward I will be editing a new file and do some correction to the footage.

Midterm-Review

Emma Cheng
I love the art style. The HUD (or whatever the text-box is called) looks very professional and reminds me of an RPG, like Maplestory.  With the storyboard provided, it shows that you have a great sense of where you are headed with this project. I really look forward to seeing a demo soon.

The 3-D car model is very well constructed. It looks like I'm looking at an actual Corvette. While did you change up your project, its a great thing that you found something else you wanted to focus on. You've mentioned creating a dynamic showcase of the model a garage while also readjusting the lighting. This is great, and I can't wait to see a demo of this work. If I were to give a suggestion I would say maybe seeing ways you can incorporate this model in an video clip of a road and having the car being a part of it.

Update

After looking over some footage and updating the storyboard, I know which scenes I would like to reshoot and what my story would be for the project. However, my date for shooting has been reschedule due to some complications on equipment and waiting on getting new one. For the time being, I did look at gimbals that would rent out for shooting day that will allow me to get smooth shots that have movement to them. This gimbal would allow me to have more dynamic shots.

I will be looking forward to get my new equipment and then start reshooting.

Midterm

Progress: Right now, I am looking the footage that I have recorded and see what would be salvageable and what needs to be reshot. There hasn't been much editing to my video file. I am planning on going back to the city and reshoot scenes. With feedback from professor and what post-editing, I am have seen a clearer direction my film should be headed to.

Goals: I want to go a reshot footage, add some warp stabilizer to some clips. Most important, TRIPOD, I need to ensure that my footage is not shakey and to ensure that It will be easier post-production.

These is the demo I have right now:

One of my goals right now is to finish a transition scene using an object blocking the video as a way to move to the next clip.
